Literacy project with WFP

To assist the Bangladesh Government in meeting its education targets set out in SDG 4, UN World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing their ‘School Feeding Programme’ that combines improving health and nutrition, as well as literacy, for children in pre-primary and primary schools.

Room to Read Bangladesh has been entrusted with improving children’s literacy condition in Ukhiya and Kutubdia, two upazilas of Cox’s Bazar. Moreover, to help build the capacity of teachers to deliver scientific classroom instruction and support headteachers and local government officials with governance, transparency, and management practices, we deliver engaging, relevant, and evidence-based training.

Literacy projects with UNICEF

We have worked with UNICEF in two projects both focusing literacy: education support for refugee children and schools in the host communities in Cox’s Bazar. As a member of the Education Sector (ES), we provided technical inputs to developing literacy resources for UNICEF to utilize in the camps.

Initiated as a 12-month ‘Education in Emergencies’ intervention, the project ran its course for 40 months benefiting some 300 thousand children who continued their education in the camps.

Besides, we also implemented a literacy support project to help model standard literacy activities in the Government Primary Schools in Chakaria, Pekua, Ramu and Teknaf upazillas.

Girls’ education with World Bank

We formed our first-ever alliance with the World Bank (WB) and Maxwell Stamp Foundation to initiate the ‘Adolescent Student Program’ (ASP). A virtual intervention, the project scaled ‘Growth Mindset’ and ‘Girls Rising’ activities among high-school students in Chittagong and Sylhet districts.

This unique intervention in the rural communities has returned quick results evidenced in several processes. One was evaluating students’ ability to identify and avoid gender-based stereotypes posed to them as scenarios on SMS. Responses came not only with the right answers but also with well-thought analysis of the scenarios. ‘Girls Rising’ part of the project was also completed successfully in Sep 2021.
